About Me

Sunrise over bent rod

Meet Karl: Fishing and Hunting Enthusiast

I have always had a great passion for fishing. Nothing beats the sun rising over a bent fishing rod on Lake Erie. Except maybe heading in with a full limit of hog Walleyes. There are hundreds of great walleye charter captains all up and down the southern shore of Lake Erie.

One could have the same beautiful site heading out early morning on the Atlantic from Morehead City N.C. to fish the Big Rock for blue fin tuna and wahoo or sail fish, there is no shortage of good deep sea fishing charters all along the eastern seaboard. For a complete fishing package, be sure to check out the camps and outfitters on the following pages.

Red Fish

Want an exciting backwater fishing experience? The west coast of Flarida is dotted with back water creeks and streams as well as rivers. One of my favorites was springtime black tip shark fishing on the Myakka River. Or to seek out the elusive red fish and snook in the shallow backwaters of Florida, there are plenty of backwater fishing guides and outfits all the way from Key West to Tampa Bay.

My hunting journeys through various states in the continental U.S took me to places like Bozeman Mt, for elk and brown bear. The Back Hills of Wyoming for elk and deer. Colorado for elk and mule deer. Kansas for super huge white tail bucks. Ohio, New York, West Virginia and Pennsylvania for white tail buck and doe.

The Thrill of the Pursuit: My Personal Adventures

I think my favorite fishing experiences were in Florida where I kept a 17 1/2′ flats boat for backwater fishing and a 33’Coastal for fishing the Gulf of Mexico. Both of them on electric lifts in my backyard on the Myakka River. Everyday started with making the tough decision to fish backwater or Golf. The Myakka River is dotted with backwater creeks and ponds as well as being lined with Mangrove trees, Redfish and Snook favorite ambush hiding spots. OF course, there were plenty of Mangrove Snapper and Sheepsheads to fill the day. If the Myakka didn’t provide, we would go up the Peace River or down in the Cape Haze area off of Charlotte Harbor where there is great backwater fishing as well.

When we decide on the big boat and fishing the gulf it sometimes meant waiting for a higher tide to get the boat off of the lift. Then it is an 18-mile trip down the Myakka, through Charlotte Harbor and out the Boca Grande opening, which in itself can be some great fishing as the water depth goes from just a few feet to as much as 70 feet. (This is home to the largest Tarpon fishing tournament in the US)

Then on out to the blue water offshore where you can find nearly unlimited species of saltwater fish. Our favorite was always Grouper fishing. The limit was slim and the slot size tight, but the eating was absolutely wonderful. Of course, there are plenty of other species including the sharks that will often steal your catch before you can land it. Dolfin will sometimes ride your front wake and keep you company for a long time. Mahi- Mahi are also quite prevalent in the spring and summer months and can be found hiding under the edge of a weed float.

My favorite hunting expeditions were to The Hot Springs Ranch just outside of Gunnison Colorado. This was a horseback, elk and mule deer hunt with a first-class outfitter who operated a dude ranch during the summer months. The accommodations and food were first class as well as the guides. Unfortunately, they ceased operations a few years ago. I liked hunts in Montana, South Dakota and Wyoming but none compared to the Gunnison elk hunt and the horseback ride up the frosty trails at 4:00am.

The knowledge and wisdom gained from a lifetime of pursuing game and fish will be shared on this sites blogs.
